Founder and leader of the United Party (UP), Alan Kyerematen, says he remains determined to challenge the long-standing dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghanaian politics.
He says he believes God will give him the strength and determination needed to pursue his ambition of creating a credible political alternative for Ghanaians.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Kyerematen said the NPP and NDC have controlled Ghana’s political space since 1992, yet the country continues to struggle with several developmental challenges.
He mentioned issues including roads, electricity, water supply and healthcare, questioning why these problems remain after more than three decades of alternating governments.
“I am still determined to break the NPP and NDC duopoly, and I am even sure if I don't have the strength and willpower, God will give it to me,” he said.
Mr Kyerematen argued that Ghana needs to look beyond the two major political parties if the country is to pursue a different development direction.
He pointed to China’s transformation over a similar period as a comparison and said Ghana’s own development challenges should encourage citizens to consider other political options.
According to him, his goal is to provide Ghanaians with another political vehicle through which they can pursue what he describes as a new development path.
He maintained that achieving a “new Ghana” would require moving beyond the traditional NPP-NDC political cycle.
Mr Kyerematen said his political agenda is focused on national interests rather than partisan considerations.
He pointed to the UP’s motto, “Ghana First,” as a reflection of his belief that the interests of the country should come before those of political parties.
He also appealed to Ghanaians who believe in his vision to support the UP as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
The former NPP presidential aspirant acknowledged that he cannot achieve the objective alone and said he needs the support of people who share his belief that Ghana can do better.
Mr Kyerematen said the 2028 elections would provide an opportunity for Ghanaians to decide whether they are willing to consider an alternative to the two parties that have dominated the country's political landscape.
He reiterated his determination to challenge the NPP-NDC duopoly, adding that he trusts God to give him the strength to continue pursuing the mission.
