England's confidence may be a little stronger than their batting. It will take more than two tough games to calm this team down.
So despite their fear of Nepal and their fear of the West Indies, England are unlikely to be confident on the eve of a crucial T20 World Cup group game against Scotland. As Phil Salt said: When we are at our best, no one can be with us.
England have arrived in India having lost just once in 11 Twenty20 matches in the past 12 months, and that win has been a source of confidence.
Salt said it simply means getting to this point better than we have in the past two matches. We are not talking about 10 [bad] matches or 12 matches; we are talking about two matches where it is fair to say we did not play well.
But the good news is that the tournament is ahead of us, and we have those opportunities. And if we can be ourselves, take charge of the game, and be smart, nothing can stop us.
It's about playing with character. Being true to yourself and the way you play the game. I think if we do that from one to 11, we'll be in a good position.
We've had good leadership in the tournament. We've played well as a team for a while, so it's just about being true to yourself as an individual and taking the game to the best of your ability, in smart ways.
In 2023, after England lost the Ashes 2-0, Ben Stokes described the situation as admirable and insisted that the way we play our cricket couldn't be better for the conditions we find ourselves in.
Two and a half years later, on a different continent and in a different format, the message amidst the difficulties is the same.
The exciting thing for everyone in our camp is that the opportunity is now before us, to prove that we can do that, to prove that when we have our backs against the wall, we can come out and play, Salt said.
The opportunity is here to come out and play with a different attitude, to express ourselves. Because if we do that, teams can't be with us.
We know a lot of things. It's about bringing it on the night, and at that moment you have to make a decision and take the right choice with your chest and put the stamp on the game. If we are going to go deep into this World Cup, we have to do it right.
Scotland have been in Kolkata since they arrived and have the advantage of playing their third consecutive match at Eden Gardens, having lost to the West Indies and beaten Italy. But Salt is no stranger to this ground.
He won the Indian Premier League with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 and has a fine record here: nine innings, five half-centuries, and an average of 50.75 at bat.
We have a lot of people in the dressing room who have played a lot of cricket here, but if people want to talk to me about Eden Gardens, I will happily do that, he said. We have a few more people in the coaching staff, and a lot of our players have had success here.
In their infinite wisdom the night before England played Scotland in what would be the first time these old rivals have completed a cricket match since 2018 and only the fifth time in history, the two teams chose to hand over the media duties to Salt, a native of Wales, who was raised in Barbados, and Brad Wheal, who was born and raised in South Africa.
Asked about his thoughts on international meetings across the sporting spectrum, Salt said: Ask the wrong person, it doesn't make sense to me.
However, he is convinced it does make sense to some people. I know some of their kids well, and I know they enjoy it a bit, playing against England.
There is more to them than just the other games, Salt said. The chance to upset England is the dream of many Scots.
