The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is beginning to take shape after France Football announced the 30 players shortlisted for this year’s award.
The list includes some of the biggest names in football, with Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi, Rodri, Jude Bellingham and defending champion Ousmane Dembélé all making the cut.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony at the London Palladium on October 26.
With the shortlist now confirmed, attention has quickly turned to the players with the strongest claims to take home the prestigious individual award.
Harry Kane has arguably put himself in the best position following an outstanding season with Bayern Munich and England.
The England captain enjoyed another prolific campaign in front of goal and played an important role in Bayern's success. His performances for the national team also strengthened his case, particularly during the World Cup.
Kane's goalscoring numbers stand out. He finished the campaign with 73 goals for club and country, underlining just how consistent he has been throughout the season.
A Ballon d’Or win would be a huge moment for Kane.
The striker has spent much of his career competing in an era dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with Ronaldo not on this year's shortlist, Kane has a genuine opportunity to claim the biggest individual prize of his career.
He would also become the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the men's Ballon d’Or.
Lamine Yamal has already established himself as one of the most exciting young players in world football, and his latest Ballon d’Or nomination could take that story to another level.
The Barcelona winger had an impressive season and played a major role for both club and country. His performances for Spain at the World Cup further strengthened his reputation.
Yamal brings something different to the Ballon d’Or debate. He is not simply being recognised because of his age or potential. His creativity, confidence and ability to influence important matches have made him one of Barcelona and Spain's key players.
At just 19, winning the Ballon d’Or would put Yamal among the youngest players ever to receive the honour.
He is also shortlisted for the Men's Young Talent of the Year award, making this another major year in his rapidly developing career.
Kylian Mbappé is no stranger to Ballon d’Or discussions, and the Real Madrid forward is once again among the leading names.
The Frenchman enjoyed another productive season and remained one of the most dangerous attackers in world football. His performances on the international stage, particularly at the World Cup, have also strengthened his case.
Goals have always been one of Mbappé's biggest weapons, but his ability to perform in important matches could prove just as important when voters make their final decisions.
There is also one major motivation for the Real Madrid star: he is still waiting for his first Ballon d’Or.
Mbappé has finished among the leading contenders in previous years, but this could be another opportunity to finally take the award.
Rodri's argument for the Ballon d’Or is built around influence rather than goals.
The Manchester City midfielder was an important figure in Spain's World Cup success and once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the game.
Rodri controls the tempo of matches, helps his team maintain possession and provides the balance that allows attacking players to shine.
That makes his candidacy different from Kane, Mbappé and Haaland. He may not have their goalscoring numbers, but his overall influence on matches gives him a legitimate chance.
Lionel Messi has also been included in the shortlist, keeping the eight-time winner involved in another Ballon d’Or race.
The Argentina captain continued to produce impressive numbers for Inter Miami and remained an important player for his national team.
Messi's experience could also work in his favour. He knows better than anyone what it takes to win the award and has already claimed it eight times.
However, the competition this year is strong.
Players such as Kane, Yamal and Mbappé have enjoyed seasons that give them a serious argument, meaning Messi may have to rely heavily on his individual performances and Argentina's achievements to convince voters.
It is difficult to leave Erling Haaland out of any discussion about the world's best players.
The Manchester City striker once again produced remarkable goalscoring numbers, finishing the campaign with 58 goals for club and country.
Haaland's ability to consistently find the net gives him a strong individual case, although the success of his team compared with some of the other leading candidates could become an important factor.
Even so, when a player scores at Haaland's rate, he is always going to be part of the Ballon d’Or conversation.
Ousmane Dembélé enters this year's race as the defending Ballon d’Or winner.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward has been nominated again after another strong campaign and will be hoping his performances are enough to convince voters that he deserves to retain the award.
Repeating as Ballon d’Or winner is extremely difficult, especially with several players having enjoyed outstanding seasons.
Dembélé will therefore have to compete with Kane, Yamal, Mbappé, Rodri and the other leading candidates for the votes.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is another name worth watching.
The Georgia international enjoyed a strong season with Paris Saint-Germain and was rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist.
Kvaratskhelia's club performances have given him a legitimate claim, although his absence from the World Cup could work against him when voters compare his season with players who performed on football's biggest international stage.
He may not be among the favourites, but he could still finish higher than expected.
African football also has representation in this year's Ballon d’Or conversation.
Senegal star Sadio Mané and Morocco's Achraf Hakimi are among the notable names on the shortlist.
Hakimi, in particular, has continued to establish himself as one of the world's leading full-backs, while Mané remains one of Africa's most successful players of his generation.
There is also recognition for Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who has been nominated for the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the best goalkeeper of the year.
For African football supporters, the nominations provide another opportunity to see the continent's leading players competing for global recognition.
One of the biggest talking points after the shortlist was released was the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portugal captain has won the Ballon d’Or five times, but he was not included among this year's 30 nominees.
His omission is significant because Ronaldo and Messi have dominated the award for much of the past two decades.
Messi remains on the list, but with Ronaldo out of the running, the spotlight has shifted towards a new group of contenders.
At this stage, Harry Kane appears to have one of the strongest cases.
His goalscoring record, Bayern Munich's success and his performances for England give him a combination that is difficult to ignore.
But the race is far from decided.
Yamal has the excitement and influence of a player who could define the next generation. Mbappé continues to deliver goals at the highest level, while Rodri offers the control and consistency of an elite midfielder.
Messi and Haaland cannot be ruled out either, while Dembélé will be looking to prove that last year's victory was not a one-off.
Ultimately, the final decision will come down to the voters.
With the award ceremony still ahead, there is plenty of time for the leading candidates to strengthen their claims.
For now, Kane may have the early advantage, but Yamal, Mbappé, Haaland, Rodri, Messi and Dembélé are all waiting for their opportunity to change the conversation before the winner is crowned in London.
